Alta Orlando will be the veteran of the field when he takes his place in the $900,000 The Race by Grins (2200m) at Cambridge Raceway on April 14.

The 10-year-old gelding has belied his age of late, with the son of Courage Under Fire winning twice at the Miracle Mile carnival, including the Gr.3 J E Binskin (1609m). However, he was disappointing when fourth in his final lead-in run at Menangle on March 26.

A New Zealand-bred, Alta Orlando began his careers in New Zealand with Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen before he joined John Dunn’s barn before heading to Australia and Belinda McCarthy’s stable in 2019.

He has performed at the highest level across the Tasman and young driver Jack Callaghan is looking forward to crossing the Tasman to take the reins in The Race.

"It is pretty exciting to have an opportunity like this if it all falls together like it looks like it will," Callaghan said.

"The horse is flying and I will just have to do some form research on some of the other runners but with ones like Mach Dan, who I have driven, Stylish Memphis and Spellbound all racing over here I know a fair few of them already."
